Genesis 18:
10 Then the Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.”
The air is sultry and the sun is hot. Abraham, among the trees of Mamre, sits in the front of his tent. Then three men appear. They look corporeally human but Abraham can discern that they’re not beings of the earth. Discernment of things heaven takes practice; Abraham is practised. On sightin them, he rises up from his place to welcome them under a tree, urges them to pause in their journey. Fetching water, he washes their feet and, contacting Sarah, has meat prepared for them as a meal. “Then the Lord” in the three men promises a son to Abraham and Sarah.
To understand this narrative, there is a need to push back the hands of time to creation time. The first Adam took lessons from God’s adversary on his way to being the image of God, bought into them and became a casualty of his own scheming. Not as if he were not warned to be careful. But his wife had another vision for she was the student well taught who in turn inducted her husband to her fascinating new revelation – a revelation far more awesome than the God-given teaching and warning, the true path to divinity. By this act of treasonable felony, this yielding to another voice of teaching other than that of God, mankind died, first in the spirit, before the soul living in the body. This is death to relationship between the Creator and mankind. By this act also, God was banned, by His reaction to the disobedience, from his creatures. Now chaotic, the crisscrossing ways to God. But God told His adversary that He would return to defeat him; He would defeat him not as God (which would make the match unfair and un-Divine in nature) but as man: God in Man to defeat man’s new god, who lorded it over the earth. God prophesied, And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, went between thy seed and her seed, it shall bruise thy head, and thou shall bruise his heel (Genesis 3:15). The seed of the woman is the second Adam. The hosts of adversaries cowed in fear at this prophecy. They’d to project and dwell in a new reality in order to continue. They were encouraged by the arch enemy to cheer up. Here was man, defeated, weak and powerless. Yes, God’s word wouldn’t return to Him unfulfilled. The adversaries knew this. But in this case, it was self-evident that this prophecy of “her seed” bruising their head was defeated on arrival! But this was God’s Spun Mystery which, though were spirits, were not privy to all the secrets of God.
Immediately after the rebellion in the garden, sin and death supervened and became the lord of mankind. Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin….death reigned from Adam to Moses (Romans 5:12, 14). With each passing day, the spirit of sin became bolder and experimental, inventive and expanding its fascinating forms. The human nature was getting weaker, conforming to the voice of his lord. Death reigned by the coming and intervention of sin. But by God’s intervention with the unveiling of the mystery of righteousness for the sin-defeated man, done in the man Jesus Christ, man can now reign over sin. For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ of they an, ((Romans 5:17). Now, man can reign in life though Jesus Christ.
God later isolated a man who, by faith in Him, came nigh to giving God His rights on earth: Abraham. God cut a covenant with him. One of the evident of this was that the man as well as his wife were dead; they couldn’t have children. It’s just in this nick of time that God displayed His faithfulness in keeping covenant. He said to Abraham, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.”
The promise of the victory of man over the adversary wasn’t just an outburst of the spur of the moment. It had its root in eternity, before the world began. God had put in place the structure of redemption before Adam came on the scene. He had the power to prevent the Adams from taking tutorials from sources other than Himself, but he simply didn’t. He delights and takes glory, as it goes with man, more in mercy, grace and redemption rather than prevention. To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved (Ephesians 1:6).
Now, here we are in the Abraham family scene of the promise of a son, God was initiating the prophecy of the coming of God-in-man, the conqueror of the adversary. The plan was to reach out to the human race – from Abraham – through His Master Ace, the Lord Jesus Christ who would satisfy the demand of His justice, bringing redemption; it’s the final path to reconciliation, unto attaining the original thought or plan for the human races of the earth. . …and through him to reconcile to himself all things whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood shed on the cross (Colossians 1:20). This is tagged as mystery in the scriptures. Everything in Christ was to run its course, even as it was in all eternity. Because of the end product of this mystery, which is godliness, it’s also called mystery of godliness. Paul summarizes it: Beyond all questions; the mystery of godliness is great:
He (God) appeared in a body
was vindicated by the Spirit,
was seen by angels
was preached among the nations,
was believed on in the world,
was taken up in glory (1 Timothy 3:15).
God’s promise in this scene, therefore, is both evidence of His faithfulness and of setting into motion a prophecy of more than four millennial. Looking at the trend of things today, the man in Christ is ever anxious to bring to quick end all of the ages. Especially do we find this among the believers in a human race that have had almost two millennial knowledge of this Truth. They talk most often of the “second coming” of Christ. They easily forget the patience of God in bringing and establishing redemption. The present human invented civilisation is indeed awesome, but this cannot make God panic; He cannot be stampeded into taking precipitating actions. With Him, everything is in order. His Spun Mystery is still unfolding. Peter writes, The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness, but is long-suffering to us ward not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). The ark of God is still waiting
Father thank so much for redemption established millennials ago. Thank you Father for the promise still holds and is sure for this age and the age to come. Once this plan was a mystery; now it’s a reality everyman can choose to walk in. The mystery has been demystified in our age and we draw closer to the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, we can reign in life through the Lord Christ. As sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord (Roman 5:21)
Thank You Lord for this
